Sony is expanding its Cinema Line with the introduction of the FX2, a full-frame film and photography camera model designed based on customer feedback. With its professional features, user-friendly interface, and innovative design elements, the FX2 promises to enhance the filmmaking experience for creators.
An Innovative Design Focused on Ease of Use
The FX2 combines the familiar look and controls of Sony’s Cinema Line cameras with new features such as a tilting viewfinder, significantly increasing usability and meeting the demands of production workflows. Its compact, lightweight design (129.7 x 77.8 x 103.7 mm and approximately 679 grams) makes it ideal for solo operators and small teams.
According to Yann Salmon-Legagneur, Head of IP&S Marketing at Sony Europe, the FX2 reflects the core values of the Cinema Line: cinematic aesthetics, reliability, and professional applicability. Creators are supported in capturing authentic emotions in every shot.
Advanced Full-Frame Video and Photography Capabilities
The FX2 is equipped with a 33.0 MP back-illuminated Exmor R sensor that produces stunning images and high-quality bokeh effects. With a maximum dynamic range of over 15 stops (S-Log3), the camera captures details across various lighting conditions. Thanks to Dual Base ISO (800 and 4000) and an expandable ISO up to 102,400, the FX2 performs excellently in low-light situations.
For post-production, the camera supports multiple recording formats, including XAVC S-I DCI 4K at 24p, and 10-bit 4:2:2 All-Intra compression. Creatives also appreciate the ability to record up to 13 hours of continuous 4K 60p footage, aided by an internal cooling fan.
The FX2 supports various frame rates, such as 60 fps in 4K and up to 120 fps in Full HD, enabling impressive slow-motion effects. Features like Log recording in Cine EI and Flexible ISO modes, along with the ability to load up to 16 LUTs for preview, give filmmakers maximum control over color and style.
Professional Creative Tools and Image Quality
The camera offers a range of creative options, including standard S-Cinetone, preset picture profiles, and desqueeze viewing for anamorphic lenses. Filmmakers such as Stefan Krenn praise its image quality and color science, delivering a cinematic look without the weight and complexity of traditional cinema equipment.
The FX2 features a new, tilting 3.68 million-dot EVF and a 3.0-inch touchscreen LCD for easy framing from any angle. Its intuitive control panel and quick-start screen setup make operation even more enjoyable.
Innovative Focus and Stabilization Features
The FX2’s autofocus has been enhanced with Real-time Recognition AF, which quickly and accurately detects subjects like people, animals, vehicles, and insects. Tools such as focus breathing compensation, AF assist, and adjustable autofocus speed provide added precision.
The camera includes Active Mode and Dynamic Active Mode for smooth handheld shots. Auto Framing and Framing Stabilizer help keep subjects perfectly in view even during movement, as if operated by a professional cameraman.
Flexible Recording and Connectivity Options
In addition to video, the FX2 supports high-resolution still images at 33 MP, ideal for high-end stills and color correction. With a simple MOVIE/STILL switch and Fn button, users can quickly toggle between video and photo modes.
The camera is equipped with various ports, including HDMI Type-A, dual-band Wi-Fi, wired LAN, USB Type-C with Power Delivery, and professional audio inputs (XLR/TRS and mini-jack). For monitoring and control, it offers 4K 60p 10-bit video output, RAW recording, and live streaming support.
Social Responsibility and Inclusivity
Sony emphasizes its commitment to sustainability with the FX2, which is produced in factories powered by renewable energy as part of its ‘Road to Zero’ initiative. Additionally, the camera is designed with extensive accessibility options, such as screen readers, screen magnification, and intuitive controls, making it easier for all creators to use.
