British hi-fi manufacturer Audiolab has announced the debut of its highly anticipated D7 and D9 DACs, successors to the legendary M-DAC, at High End Munich 2025, held from May 15–18. These new digital-to-analogue converters (DACs) promise to elevate audio performance for both hi-fi systems and headphone enthusiasts, combining advanced technology with Audiolab’s signature affordability. Visitors can experience the D7 and D9 at Audiolab’s booth in Hall 3, J09 during the show.
Continuing the M-DAC Legacy
Since the launch of the iconic M-DAC in 2011, followed by the M-DAC+ in 2016, Audiolab has been a leader in delivering high-quality DACs at accessible price points. The D7 and D9 mark the first standalone DAC releases from Audiolab in eight years, building on the brand’s expertise with ESS Technology’s Sabre DAC chips. These new models are designed to enhance digital audio for a wide range of setups, from desktop systems to premium hi-fi rigs.
The D7 is a compact DAC, measuring 180 × 56 × 208 mm (WxHxD), ideal for home use, while the larger D9, at 315 × 88 × 277 mm, aligns with the build quality and aesthetics of Audiolab’s flagship 9000 Series components. Both models feature sturdy aluminium chassis and tactile control knobs, designed to complement Audiolab’s 6000 and 7000 Series components.
Advanced Features and Connectivity
The D7 and D9 are packed with features to support modern audio needs:
- High-Resolution Audio: Both DACs support full MQA decoding and handle high-resolution and lossless audio formats. The D9 uses the advanced ESS ES9038PRO chip for superior sonic clarity and dynamics, while the D7 employs the ES9038Q2M chip for excellent performance at its price point.
- Versatile Connectivity: The D7 offers USB A and B, four S/PDIF inputs, balanced XLR, single-ended RCA outputs, optical, and digital outputs, plus Bluetooth 5.1 with aptX HD. The D9 adds an AES3/EBU digital input and supports LDAC, aptX Low Latency, AAC, and SBC for enhanced Bluetooth performance.
- Powerful Headphone Amplification: Both models feature headphone amp circuitry delivering up to 600mW across 20 to 600 ohms, ensuring dynamic and detailed performance with even challenging headphones.
- Roon Tested: The D7 is certified as ‘Roon Tested,’ ensuring seamless integration with Roon audio environments.
The D9, described as a larger and more capable version of the D7, incorporates top-grade components and shares circuitry with the 9000N streaming DAC (minus the streaming module). Its premium build and additional inputs make it a standout for audiophiles seeking top-tier performance.
Sound Quality and Design
Audiolab’s extensive experience with ESS Sabre chips ensures that the D7 and D9 avoid the sterile sound sometimes associated with these components. The D7’s circuitry layout protects the audio signal from interference, supported by low-noise power supplies, while the D9’s Class A post-DAC filter enhances clarity and dynamics. Early feedback praises their “spacious, detailed, and dynamic” performance, particularly for headphone listening.
Available in silver or black, the D7 and D9 combine sleek design with practical functionality. The D7, priced at £449 (approx. $600 / AU$999), offers exceptional value, while the D9, at £1,099 (approx. $1,460 / AU$2,275), targets audiophiles seeking premium performance. Both models will be available from mid-May 2025.
