In the evolving landscape of high-fidelity audio, audiophiles often find themselves weighing the trade-offs between sonic excellence and system simplicity. Arcam’s flagship SA45 integrated streaming amplifier is designed with precisely this audience in mind, those who desire superb sound quality but also appreciate the convenience and space-saving benefits of an all-in-one unit versus a system of separates.
This approach appeals to listeners who want to minimize complexity without sacrificing the refined musicality and dynamic authority often associated with separate components. The SA45 delivers on this promise by marrying Class G amplification, high-resolution streaming, and advanced Dirac Live room correction in a single chassis. It is a compelling, practical choice for audiophiles and cinephiles alike, offering an elegant solution that combines performance, versatility, and future-proof technology.
Arcam’s 5th generation amplifier may not capture every last nuance that a system of dedicated separates might extract, it offers an impressively balanced and engaging sonic signature. Its design ethos reflects a modern understanding of how listeners consume music and film, blending high-quality amplification with integrated streaming services and sophisticated digital room correction. The result is a streamlined, high-performance amplifier that meets the demands of contemporary audiophiles seeking an all-encompassing, user-friendly experience.
The Arcam SA45 is priced at £4,999, or approximately $5,500 U.S. While this places it in the premium integrated amplifier category, the inclusion of streaming, room correction, and Class G amplification within one chassis makes it a highly competitive option given the performance and feature set it offers.
Design & Build
The SA45 presents a restrained, modern aesthetic that blends seamlessly with both hi-fi and living-room systems. Its machined aluminum front panel houses a large, 8.8-inch high-resolution TFT display, while volume and source selection are handled via tactile, precision-machined knobs. The display is not touchscreen, but it offers excellent clarity for album art, track information, and system settings.
Connectivity is extensive: HDMI eARC, dual optical and coaxial inputs, three analog line-ins, a balanced XLR input, dual subwoofer outputs (both balanced and single-ended), and a high-quality MM/MC phono stage. Ethernet and dual-band Wi-Fi ensure flexible network connectivity, while Chromecast, AirPlay 2, and aptX Adaptive Bluetooth support wireless streaming. Roon Readiness is promised via a future firmware update, ensuring the SA45 will integrate with advanced multi-room systems.
The chassis is rigid and well-ventilated, and the Class G design ensures minimal heat output even under high loads. Tactile controls feel premium, and the supplied Radia app provides additional remote operation. Build quality, materials, and ergonomics place the SA45 clearly in the upper echelon of integrated amplifiers, and the design allows it to blend seamlessly into both dedicated listening rooms and living-room systems.

Setup & Dirac Live Calibration
Setup is straightforward. The physical connections are intuitive, and the Radia app walks the user through network setup and source selection. Dirac Live calibration is guided with a supplied measurement microphone, capturing multiple points to generate filters that correct both frequency and time-domain anomalies.
In my listening room, Dirac dramatically improved low-frequency control. Problematic 60–70 Hz room resonances were tamed, allowing basslines to be more defined and percussion to retain clarity. The midrange opened up, giving vocals and solo instruments a natural, lifelike presence. Dirac Bass Control allowed seamless integration of dual subwoofers, delivering a coherent front-to-back image and removing the usual “boominess” that can plague multi-sub setups.
For cinephiles, dialogue intelligibility improved, and tonal balance across the listening area became remarkably consistent. Even in wide seating arrangements, Dirac maintained stereo cohesion. Extended listening sessions revealed the amplifier’s ability to preserve low-level.
Streaming Interface & Usability
The SA45’s streaming platform covers all major services. While not as visually polished as dedicated standalone streamers, it is reliable and responsive. The Radia app mirrors front-panel functionality, allowing remote control of volume, source, and Dirac profiles.
Firmware updates enhance performance, add features, and refine integration. Occasional OS quirks exist, but Arcam’s commitment to updates ensures stability and feature growth over time. Networked playback over Ethernet was consistently stable, while Wi-Fi handled high-resolution files without dropouts. Pending Roon integration promises multi-room flexibility, expanding the system’s versatility.
Listening Tests
I evaluated the SA45 with five tracks via Tidal and Qobuz: classical, jazz, rock, acoustic, and electronic. The amplifier was connected to my Revival Audio Atalante 3 speakers using Supra sword Excalibur speaker cables.
- Classical – Bach, Toccata and Fugue in D minor, Berlin Philharmonic (Qobuz 24/96)
The organ’s pedal notes were authoritative and precise. Dirac Live allowed room reverb to shine naturally without masking bass. Dynamic swings between soft and climactic passages were handled effortlessly, and harmonic overtones shimmered without harshness. Subtle details, such as soft tremolos and pipe stop changes, were clearly resolved, demonstrating remarkable control and transparency. - Jazz – GoGo Penguin, “Blank Template #7” (Tidal)
Piano, bass, and percussion textures were crisp and detailed. Bass lines remained defined, and midrange transparency allowed the interaction between instruments to be fully appreciated. The SA45 preserved microdynamic cues such as finger slides and pedal resonance. Imaging was precise, and transient attacks were immediate, giving the track a sense of live presence. - Rock – David Bowie, “Let’s Dance” (Tidal)
The amplifier delivered punchy bass, crisp percussion, and clear guitars. Vocals were forward without harshness. Layering and rhythmic drive were preserved, although microdynamic nuance was slightly less refined than top-tier separates. Dense arrangements remained coherent, demonstrating excellent channel separation. - Acoustic – John Mayer, “Gravity” live (Qobuz)
Vocals were full-bodied and guitar harmonics natural. String decay and transient attacks were accurate. Low-level audience and room ambience were preserved, enhancing realism. Even during denser passages, clarity and definition were maintained. - Electronic – Jon Hopkins, Emerald Rush (Qobuz 24/96)
Layered synths and deep sub-bass were coherent and controlled. Dirac’s influence ensured tight, clean low-end response. High frequencies were articulate, and layered textures retained separation without smearing. Percussive transients were fast and precise, maintaining rhythm and clarity at club-level SPLs.
Across all genres, the SA45 revealed detail without fatigue or harshness. Its tonal balance was neutral yet musical, with smooth highs, controlled mids, and extended bass.
Cinephile Soundtrack Performance
Using HDMI eARC to connect the SA45 to my TCL QM850G 4K TV set I found the SA45 delivered punchy, dynamic, and clear soundtracks. Action sequences in Hans Zimmer’s Inception score highlighted the amplifier’s dynamic authority and low-frequency control. Dialogue remained intelligible in dense scenes, and spatial cues were coherent. Dirac improved multi-channel downmixes to stereo, preserving imaging depth and lateral separation.
Extended film sessions showed no listener fatigue. Subtle cues, such as whispered dialogue and distant ambient effects, were preserved without exaggeration. Even long bass passages remained clean and tight, illustrating the synergy of Class G amplification and Dirac room correction.
The SA45 was able to deliver peak power without excessive heat or distortion, while maintaining organic tonality. The Class G hybrid design ensured both musicality and headroom, accommodating dynamic passages from orchestral crescendos to rock climaxes and complex electronic textures. I found rapid changes in volume, microdynamic transitions, and tonal timbre remain consistent across multiple listening sessions.
