Astell & Kern has recently unveiled its newest addition: the PD10. This digital audio player (DAP) represents a significant step forward in the evolution of A&K’s renowned line of portable music players. Earlier this month, the PD10 was first shown to the public at CanJam Singapore, and we couldn’t wait to learn more. While official sales are set to begin in late April via the A&K website, we expect the high-end player to be available shortly thereafter through specialized dealers. The recommended retail price is €2,990.
A New Direction in Design and Sound Quality
Astell & Kern is known for its wide range of products, from affordable entry-level models to high-end flagships like the SP300M Limited Edition in Copper Nickel. The PD10 breaks with some traditional design principles and adopts a bold new style. The device combines modern materials such as stainless steel and glass, giving it a luxurious appearance. A striking new feature is the replacement of the classic volume wheel with buttons, resulting in a sleek, minimalist design that simplifies and streamlines operation.
HEXA: Advanced Signal Separation
The PD10 is equipped with the innovative HEXA audio circuit, the same as in the flagship SP3000. This circuit contains four AKM AK4498EX DACs and two AK4191EQ chips for digital signal processing. It is the first DAP in the world to feature the groundbreaking AK4498EX chip. By physically separating digital and analog signals, the PD10 delivers an unparalleled playback quality characteristic of Astell & Kern.
Dual Circuits for Superior Performance
Unlike many other DAPs that use a single circuit for both balanced and unbalanced outputs, the PD10 features two separate circuits. This maximizes audio performance regardless of the output option. Additionally, two dedicated amplifiers provide a tailored listening experience: a Normal Gain AMP for pure sound and a High Gain AMP for dynamic, complex audio with more depth. Thanks to the Smart Gain feature, the device automatically selects the appropriate amp mode by detecting impedance, eliminating the need for manual switching.
Maximum Audio Innovation and Signal Management
The separation of circuits and dual amps ensure that the signal is neither reduced nor restored, as is common in many other DAPs. This means the PD10 delivers optimal audio performance regardless of which output is used a true innovation in portable audio.
Excellent Storage and Connectivity
The PD10 offers 256 GB of internal storage, expandable up to 2 TB via microSD cards. It supports dual-band Wi-Fi (2.4/5 GHz), DLNA networks, USB digital audio output, and USB-C for data transfer and charging. The player can also function as an external DAC via Bluetooth or USB, making it highly versatile.
Its 6-inch Full HD touchscreen (1080×2160) provides a crisp display for navigating your music collection. The PD10 supports native playback of hi-res PCM up to 32-bit/768kHz and DSD512. An LED ring around the power button displays real-time information about the bitrate of the currently playing track. ReplayGain ensures consistent volume levels across tracks, and with AK File Drop, files can be wirelessly transferred via Wi-Fi, smartphone, or FTP. AirPlay allows streaming and control of music from Apple devices.
Wireless Audio Quality and Codec Support
The PD10 supports multiple high-quality Bluetooth codecs, including aptX HD, LHDC, and LDAC. Bluetooth 5.3 provides faster, more stable connections, while BT Sink enables the device to act as a Bluetooth DAC, streaming audio wirelessly from external sources.
Docking Station for Home Use
In addition to portable features, the PD10 comes with a dedicated cradle. This allows the player to be used as a high-end home audio device with professional outputs such as XLR, USB input, and charging options. The cradle supports simultaneous charging and digital signal input via USB, enabling you to play music while recharging the battery. An LED indicates bitrate information, so you always know the quality of your audio.
